The Italian Tomato Garden

This has nothing to do with Chicago, but it's always garden joke season!

An old Italian lived alone in New Jersey . He wanted to plant his
annual tomato garden, but it was very difficult work as the ground
was hard.

His only son, Vincent, who used to help him, was in prison. The old man wrote a letter to his son and described his predicament:

Dear Vincent,
I am feeling pretty sad, because it looks like I won't
be able to plant my tomato garden this year. I'm just getting too old to be digging up a garden plot. I know if you were here my troubles would be over.. I know you would be happy to dig the plot for me, like in the old days..
Love, Papa

A few days later, the old Italian man received a letter from his son.

Dear Pop,
Don't dig up that garden. That's where the bodies are buried.
Love,
Vinnie

At 4 a.m. The next morning, FBI agents and local police arrived and dug up the entire area without finding any bodies. They apologized to the old man and left. That same day the old man received another letter from his son.

Dear Pop,
Go ahead and plant the tomatoes now. That's the best I could do under the circumstances.
Love,
Vinnie

I'm having my lunch in the cafe at Dominick's, the grocery store on Roosevelt Road and Clark Streets in the city. From here I can see the Sears Tower, the tallest building in the United States. This is how it looks out the window where I'm sitting.

Lunch is good, deliciously fresh strawberries. Hey, they were on sale for $1.49 a pound. Some carrot sticks and soup from the deli round things out.

The woman I picked up this morning is from South Africa. She is not used to cool weather, and the airline had lost her coat. We went to Nordstrom's and found a gorgeous cashmere on sale. Marked down from $1400 to $570. Not bad.

My kids think I'm crazy for doing this, but I started doing facial exercises. It's called Facial Magic.
Hey, if the rest of my body likes exercise, why not my face? I'm taking before and after pictures, so I'll let you know how it works.

Here are some other pix I have taken lately.

The King and Queen of Mardi Gras

I saw these two lovelies today coming out of the Westin Hotel River North in Chicago. Their hands were laden with goodies to toss for Mardi Gras. Yes, we do celebrate Mardi Gras in Chicago. In fact, we'll take every possible opportunity to throw a giant party.

Soon it will be Saint Patrick's Day. The Chicago River will be dyed green, everyone is Irish for the day.

Of course, what Saint Patty's Day means to me, is it's time to plant the potatoes.

The Lady and the Flowers

Here's the sweetheart who takes care of the beautiful flowers at Dominicks . The roses were $19.99 a dozen last week, and $9.99 a dozen this week. Maybe Cupid got $10.00 for each bouquet sold.

They're starting early with the tulips this year. Nothing like tulips and daffys to make me feel like spring when the thermometer says 19 degrees Fahrenheit.

I Love You

"I Love You"
"I'm Sorry"
"Please Forgive Me"
"Thank You"

Love seems to be the theme this week, with Valentine's Day coming up on Saturday. I was thinking how sad I was that I had no one to send a valentine to. Sad that I have nobody to spend Valentine's Day with. Then I realized that it was my own fault. It's really me I want to have a love affair with, if that makes any sense. So I can send a valentine to myself!

I came across this the, other day, and it just stopped me in my tracks. I create everything that happens in my life. By saying these four little sentences, to myself, to others, I can choose between love and fear. Ultimately, so much in my life boils down to a choice between love and fear. Today I choose LOVE!

"I Love You"

"I'm Sorry"

"Please Forgive Me"

"Thank You"

Magical words!

Happy Valentine's Day

There's Something about Rain and McDonald's

There's something about a rainy day that makes me feel like snapping pictures. Gray and rainy, nothing to do but take pictures.

Sometimes I think I have a McDonald's obsession.
Okay, not just sometimes. And I don't just think it, I know it. I love McDonald's for breakfast. I order a side order of scrambled eggs. That's healthy enough, yes? A snack is from the dollar menu. They have a lovely yogurt and fruit parfait, delicious. And for a really decadent snack , the fries! The rock and roll Mc Donald's downtown Chicago has free parking and a fabulous view from the second floor, comfy furniture. There's a perennial garden planted, with flowering prairie plants and grasses. Oh, and did I mention free wi-fi? Maybe I can take a picture of every McDonald's in Chicago! Best of all, McDonald's has clean bathrooms.

Bathrooms are hugely important when you are a chauffeur. I am a bathroom connisseur. I can tell you which hotels have easy access bathrooms, which ones are luxurious, which ones are so so. One fancy hotel bathroom has a great nude painting of Orpheus. Some hotels are minimalist. One hotel looks like an Ikea store.

It's been rainy all day. On sunny days I never remember to take pictures. But on rainy days... well, you get the idea.

In Rosemont, Illinois, you can see a giant rose from the highway.

I never noticed that the Rosemont rose is next to a McDonald's.

Chicago in Winter

Thank you all for the notes. It feels good to be missed! Today the snow is melting. Tomorrow is supposed to be warm, 60 degrees Farenheit. Next holiday after Valentine's Day is St. Patrick's Day. Which means it's almost time to plant the potatoes.

It's About Time

It's been a long long time since I have updated my blog. My apologies to you. Finally, after 12 long weeks, I am back at work driving around the Windy City. It feels great to be back!

Off for Awhile

Sorry I haven't posted for awhile. My back has been giving me problems, and I am off work for awhile. The good thing is that my company has disability insurance, so I get paid while I heal. I've been knitting. Made a pink baby blanket for a friend's new little girl. I also am crocheting an afghan for my son. Driving must be really bad for my back. Not sure if the doctor will let me go back to work at all.

Chicago Owl

Chicago Owl
Originally uploaded by SandyJasmine
As soon as I had a free minute when I was near O'Hare, I drove back to the woods. I was hoping to see the owl I disturbed yesterday, the owl that was in the old log I sat on to tie my shoe. At first I didn't see him. I sat on the old log I sat on yesterday to tie my shoe. No wild flapping like yesterday. I was disappointed. I got up to go home, when to my delight, there he was again. At first I didn't get too close.

I got a little braver, and moved in a little closer.

He was so cute, I just wanted to scritch him between the ears, like a cat.

I Saw an Owl

I had an hour to spare when I was at O'Hare Airport today. I went for a walk in the neighboring woods. I sat on a big fallen tree trunk to tie my shoelace.

All of a sudden I heard wild flapping, and I saw what I thought was a hawk fly out. It sat on the ground and I saw the big round eyes and the cat ears. It was an owl. It let me get within a foot of it. I walked very slowly. It really did look just like a brown cat from the top. Same size, same ears. I talked to it softly, then walked away.

I've never seen an owl before -- it was really amazing. As I continued my walk I saw a deer with her fawn in the woods. Also not afraid of people, they just looked at me. This was within a mile of the second busiest airport in the world. I was impressed. The cool part was that the owl wasn't afraid of me -- I think it was curious about me.

I saw this guy sleeping on the street. He was selling the magazines he was laying on.

When he sat up, I gazed into his deep eyes. It looked like one eye was blind. But if only his eyes could speak -- what a story they would tell.

I was in Madison, WI on Monday. Kalamazoo, MI today. The leaves are not turning here and Michigan, but in Madison the leaves are starting to blaze! In Madison sugar maples are orange red, the white ash and the honey locusts are brilliant yellow. And Crimson Queen Norway Maples are dark burgundy. In Chicago, only the honey locusts are starting to turn.

For comparison

Dieting vs. Anorexia

Control. Feeling in control. Being in control of my body. Controlling my weight. Those words set off a lot of strong emotions for me.

A couple of years ago I watched a movie. Requiem for a Dream. I was taking diet pills at the time, and my daughter tsk tsked and showed me this film. It was about a 20ish son who was addicted to heroin and his girlfriend. The film compared the mother who was taking diet pills to the son who was on heroin. The mother got more addicted to diet pills and kept needing more and more pills to get the same effect. Her diet doctor was uncaring, and mostly cared about getting patients in and out the door quickly. The doctor prescribed more and more diet pills for the mother, even though she showed signs of detachment from reality. At the same time, the son and his girlfriend got more and more addicted to heroin, with some disturbing scenes of the girlfriend prostituting for drugs. The mom eventually lost it, and ended up unable to talk, in a state hospital with horror stories of its own.

I still think of that movie occasionally. It had a chilling effect on me. Of course, I was in denial that it could ever happen to me, at the time. In retrospect, it was happening to me. The pills had me short tempered and nasty. I didn't even notice.

Hotel Burnham and a perfect summer

The weather in Chicago has been nothing less than spectacular this summer. Right now it is 81 degrees with no humidity. I shot some cell phone pix by the Hotel Burnham. The cute doorman was nice enough to pose for me. The hotel is named for Daniel Burnham, the architect responsible for Chicago being surrounded by public parkland and green space by the lake for all to enjoy.

Daniel Burnham built this as an office building in 1895; four years after the Columbian Exposition that had him build what is now the Museum of Science and Industry and the Field Museum of Natural History. Originally one of the first office buildings in the loop, it is now a hotel, on the corner of Washington and State Streets, near the Marshall Fields clock.

I was standing in front of the Hotel Burnham and saw this building and clouds reflected in the building across the street, on the north side of Washington Street, at State Street.

Secret cameras

I sure wish that I had a secret, invisible camera attached to me at all times. Then I could take pictures of anything, anytime I wanted. The way it would work; there would be a little squeeze ball, like the atomizer on the end of your grandma's perfume bottle. The squeeze ball would be attached to a tube to activate the camera button by air pressure.

Speaking of my grandma, here is a picture of my grandpa Ben Simmons, just like I remember him; Driving a big Cadillac, smoking a cigar, and talking to everyone in the back seat while driving.

HOW I WORK OUT ON THE ROAD

1. Bring 10 minute workout DVD to work
2. Bring iBook to work
3. Set up iBook on trunk of car.
4. Go to favorite spot at Franklin Street close to the viaduct where the bums hang out. Beautiful park. Great view.
5. Proceed to do 10 minute Ballet Workout or the workout of choice.

As long as the workouts are standing workouts I can do them with the iBook set up on the trunk of the car. I bet I get some workout partners at the limo lot at O'Hare Airport pretty soon. I already have some O'Hare walking partners. People see me walking around the lot and they join me. One lap around the limos is a quarter mile so it is easy to tally my walks if I forgot my Nike + iPod.

No Shoes

I'm spoiled. I forgot to bring my running shoes with me today. Not just any shoes. My Nikes. I like to walk, and since I have so much down time, I bought myself a Nike+ iPod. There is a little transponder that fits in my shoe. A receiver plugs into my iPod. The Nike+ iPod keeps track of my distance, time, and calories. I can push a button while I am walking or running to get my stats read to me. Pretty cool. I can choose to hear a woman's voice or a man's voice. When I reach a new record, it congratulates me. This makes it lots of fun to walk. I still hear my music through the iPod.

I walked a couple of miles in my black shoes. But it just wasn't the same. I miss my Nike + iPod. Sigh.

Thinking about a better camera

I'm sure these pictures would be better if I had another camera. The steps might be easier, too. How I do it now:

1. Download the pictures from the phone to the computer using BitPim.
2. Import the folder of photos into iPhoto.
3. Put the pictures on Flickr.
4. Upload to Blogger

I thought about using Picassa, but Picassa gets thumbs down from me. The cool features on the Picassa uploader aren't available for Mac.

Of course I would be much more prolific if it didn't involve so many steps. Any ideas, you guys?

New Photos

Too lazy to post them here, but I put a bunch of new pictures on Flickr http://flickr.com/photos/sandyjasmine/ . I don't know what it is about cloudy days that makes me want to take pictures.

I'm dreading going home. A new kitchen floor is going in today. One installer wanted to start with a chalk line in the center of the room and start laying the tile in the center. Makes sense to me. The other guy won. He started in a corner. I hope we don't end up with a crooked line at the end.

My remodeling is about half done. All the nasty old wallpaper is out. The fuzzy junk and the mirror stuff, too. The walls look great. I got an antique white - it's sort of a cream color. I have new light fixtures in the whole house. New door handles are coming next, and all new outlets and switches.

I have the courage up to go home and check the floor, so I better stop writing in case I chicken out again.

The Late 1960's

Does anyone besides me remember the Electric Theater? Later on, it was renamed the Kinetic Playground. It was on Clark Street near Lawrence Avenue. I saw the most amazing shows there in 1969 or so. The Who played Tommy there before the album came out. I remember seeing The Paul Butterfield Blues Band and Alice Cooper. What a magical year for music. Joni Mitchell played a little hall at Northwestern University, as did the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin. I also saw Joe Cocker at the Aragon Ballroom, and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young at the Auditorium Theater. Amazing acoustics! Also at the Auditorium, the bands Yes, and Emerson, Lake, and Palmer, both on the same night. There was also a hall called the Chicago Ampitheater, but the only band I remember seeing there was Jethro Tull. My gosh, Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention played at Ravinia, of all places. Ravinia is an outdoor summer music venue that mostly features the Chicago Symphony. Frank Zappa was awesome. I tried to describe the late 60's to my kids. I told them to picture someone smoking a joint in New York, then passing it to someone in Chicago, who passed it to someone in California. In case you're wondering, I don't use drugs now. I outgrew them by the time I hit my 20s. The late 60's was a magical time. Or does everyone feel that for their late teen years?

What happened to our road show business?

Whomp, the sub prime mortgage mess hits, and all our private equity guys disappear. Does that mean the financing dried up? I haven't seen any analysts lately, either. The analysts come out to give the big financial institutions the scoop on whatever their sector is; say software, metals, whatever people are invested in. Our business sucks, maybe partly due to crappy winter weather. Maybe the first thing to go, to cut costs, is the car service.

Just did today's exercise:

One more cup of tea for the road

Ugh, one of the NOT perks of my job is leaving the house at in insane hour on Monday mornings. I keep the Cadillac at home Monday through Friday. But on the weekends I bring my own car home. Vinnie kindly gives me starting trips near my house, which is 30 miles from the freaking office where I have to pick up the Cadillac. He always forgets that I don't have the car at home on Mondays. I have a 6:30 pickup today. Which is bad enough, but I have to leave my house at 4:30 for a ride 10 minutes from my house because I have to go get the( %*#)_@ car. Grumble done.

It's 3:15 in the morning. One more cup of tea. Then one hour of working out. Fifteen minutes to shower and do my hair. Today's workout will be: 10 minutes mini-trampoline. 20 minutes treadmill. 30 minutes aerobic ball workout. My leg and back are much better. I saw a sports medicine doctor. After two months of two to three times a week at the chiropractor doing nothing at all to help, the sports medicine doctor gave me Prednisone. After 6 days on the medication I have no more pain. I feel great. Counting my blessings today. I am thrilled that I have the good health and ability to pound my workouts. Yes, in counting my blessings, I am grateful to the universe that my life is so full of goodness.

My homemade home gym

I am happy I turned my dining room into a home gym! I made the decision to spend my company's fitness reimbursement money on "stuff" rather than a gym membership. I weighed it out, and I just think I would not go to the gym much. My fear was of that the machines' germy surfaces, and coughing drippy people. I love the variety of my home workouts.

I set up my laptop to play DVDs while I work out. I realized I am happiest when I have a DVD to follow.

Treadmill. Yay, I love it . I watch DVD movies while I tread the mill. I always thought we should put that energy to work, you know? Couldn't running the belt capture enough power to electrify my house while I am running the treadmill? Somehow I could hook it up like a solar collector, then sell the excess energy to a power company, if there is excess? Or at least run the fan for the treadmill while I work out.

Exercise Ball: Why was I so resistant to using these things years ago? 1. I never realized I could get a great cardio workout on the ball, as well as it being easy on the joints. I got a couple of ball DVDs with the ball and a book, from Aldi, for only $12.95. My favorite DVD is by Lucy Knight. She has a great English accent, and is very obviously knowledgeable about how the body works. Even fifteen minutes of Lucy's DVD has my heart rate up considerably. 2. The ball is great therapy for my back. I sit on it at the computer, rather than a chair. That forces me to stabilize myself using my core muscles. I also drape myself over the ball and rock, for relief of back pain. Back extensions on the ball are great for that, too.

Mini Trampoline:
Again I have a DVD but it is only around 10 minutes long. If you know of any others, or good podcasts, please let me know.

Balance Board:
Sadly neglected these days.

Weights and Weight bench:
Sadly neglected, also. I have dumbbells ranging from 2 pounds to 25 pounds, and just haven't been using them.

Inversion Board:
One thing that really helps my lower back and snapping thigh/hip is inversion. Okay, it's not really an inversion board, I made it myself, I tipped over a large upholstered office chair, and I drape myself over it, then relax. It really opens up my spine and gives me relief from the lower back ache and thigh pains. I have been having pains in my lower back and hips. I am seeing a Chiropractor for it, and it is helping a little. If it doesn't get better soon, I will start seeing a Sports Medicine doctor.

Therabands:
Those balloon-like rubbery bands that give resistance. Great for working my hip abducter muscles.

The only exercise that I resent:
I have about 20 minutes of stretches to do twice a day that my Chiropractor gave me. It helps my back and hip pain, but I always resent the time I have to put into it.

Yoga DVDs:
I still like doing my yoga with DVDs and stuff I Tivo. For yoga I still like Rodney Yee's Energy Yoga, and any type of Vinyasa Flow Yoga or Power Yoga.

Cardio DVDs:
Power 90 Beachbody by Tony Horton is still a favorite. Especially the Abs 100; 10 reps each of 10 different exercises. Abs 200 is good too, 20 reps of 10 exercises. A few things I Tivoed I still use. I still love Kendell Hogan's 60 minute Body Sculpt, and his 60 minute Boot Camp. For me, the ideal workout is 30 minutes. I wish more good fitness classes on TV were 30 minutes. Most seem to be an hour, which after commercials is 45 minutes.

That's about it. I love having all these choices. I start the day with 10 minutes of stretches and 10 or so minutes of meditation. Then I work out for 30 or so minutes, cool down, shower and go to work. My preference is a 30 minute workout. Most of my favorite workout DVDs are 60 minutes, I hope to get more that are 30 minutes. I still have to install the high impact flooring mats under the treadmill, and then I am done making my little home gym.

TREADING WATER

These are the lessons I must have needed to learn today:
1. WHEN THE STUDENT IS READY, THE TEACHER APPEARS

I just met a homeless guy at Starbucks in Old Town. He was the most amazing artist. This guy was drawing highly detailed and colored cartoons. He handed me his book and let me flip through it. I was highly impressed. He told me he had sold a few books. I suggested to him that he give some of his work away. He looked shocked, and said that he couldn't do that. I explained further, that he could give some of his work away free on the internet. Just start a website with free comics people can read, then set up a PayPal account to take donations. Then he could make snippets of his other comics to sell. He said he would open a checking account so he can take PayPal. Wow, I'm great at thinking up ideas for other people, why can't I do this for myself?

2. GIVE IT AWAY

Giving it away is something I have been thinging about a lot lately. My entrepreneurial self wants desperately to get back into business for myself. Winter time is my natural time for incubating ideas. I am looking for the right idea, the right thing to give away to attract business.

3. NEGATIVITY IS WHAT KEEPS ME IN A PRISON

The homeless artist started talking about why he was homeless. It was a lesson I needed to learn today He was homeless because he was carrying the paychecks for his boss, and he found out that someone had less seniority than he did and was making more money. That wasn't fair. Also, the price of apartments is too expensive. And you have to have two jobs just to afford the rent. I couldn't even answer. I just nodded. I realized that when I get to talking negatively about things in my life, all it attracts to me is negativity. Nothingness. Negativity keeps me imprisoned in a box of negativity

My spirit guide has been talking to me lately. I know you are going to think I am nuts for saying I have a spirit guide, but I do. This is what he has been telling me.

TREADING WATER: I have been treading water for quite some time. Neither moving here, nor there. I am in a state of limbo, waiting for my life to happen.

I AM THE CHOREOGRAPHER OF MY OWN LIFE

God helps implement the plan, but I have to come up with the ideas. I have to create the design.

EVERYTHING IN LIFE BOILS DOWN TO A CHOICE BETWEEN LOVE AND FEAR
--Most men lead lives of quiet desperation and go to the grave with the song still in them. (Thoreau)
So, do I want to keep on treading water? Or is it time to swim?

President Bush in Chicago

I watched Air Force One land at O'Hare Airport this morning. Whenever President Bush flies into Chicago from the airport in a helicopter, he has two helicopters surrounding his helicopter. All other air traffic is stopped.

It seems like President Bush may be taking elocution lessons. Although, he did say that to improve the economy, we should using nuk-u-lure energy power.   Bush spoke today at a school about the success of his No Child Left Behind program.  Then he spoke to a group about the economy.  I didn't quite get what he said, (as usual) although an analogy to Winston Churchill was fairly funny.  Bush said that Churchill was known for what he did for the English language, while he (Bush) was know for what he did to the English language.

Chicago, We're Glad You're Here!

I was bored, it was the day before Christmas Eve. I had to meet a customer at Midway Airport. Everyone was in a festive mood, and there were bands playing, and Christmas trees decorated with music notes. If you're ever at Midway Airport, they have great food from authentic Chicago local favorite restaurants. Be sure to get yourself some food to take on the plane. When I visit my son in California, I like to take him a corned beef on rye with mustard and amazing lightly dilled pickles from Manny's Deli. Manny's on Roosevelt Road is an institution in Chicago. Everyone from cops to the brokers from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and the Chicago Board of Trade visits Manny's. (Wow, Manny's should pay me for this plug)

These guys were so good. There were bands playing at Midway Airport during December. I asked them to play Take 5, and the chops just rolled off their instruments like honey.

Rainy day in Chicago

Nothing to do on this rainy day, but listen to XM Radio in the car and knit scarves. I love that XM has six different holiday music stations. I am switching between hysterically stupid "Special XMAS," and traditional, and classical, and Chanukah music.

I am looking forward to midnight mass. I always wonder if I appreciate Christmas so much because I was born Jewish. Although I had a wonderful childhood, I felt deprived of Christmas as a kid. The whole world had Christmas. I felt like I was peeking in the window, looking in on something wonderful that everyone else had.

The White City

Ladies holding up the museum
Did you ever read the book, "Devil in the White City?"
It was a murder mystery set in Chicago around the time of the Columbian Exposition in the 1890s. The White City was the Museum of Science and Industry, originally built to house the Columbian Exposition.

The Ferris Wheel had its debut at this World's Fair. As did the first affordable portable camera.

Here are the ladies that have so graciously held up the museum with their heads for the past 114 years. The Art Deco building is cool and stately. The inside of the museum reminds me of the set for The Wizard of Oz.

Adventures in Driving

The best part of my job is learning people's stories. What they do. Who they are. What kind of businesses they are in. What their dreams are.

I occasionally drive famous people around. **Disclaimer. I swear to Pete that I will NOT mention your name, what you do, or anything identifying about you!** I wish I could, but I can't really mention any names. Usually they are really nice. I can only remember one that was a little ditzy, a young actress/singer. If her manager and her called each other Dude one more time.... well, let's just say it was annoying. CEOs are in general, charming, down to earth acting people. Come to think of it, I guess that's why they get hired.

I have so much fun doing what I do. My goal is to make the trip go so smoothly that there is no stress at all for the people I am driving. The perfect trip. On time. Clean Car. I offer to pick up lunches, send faxes, run errands, or whatever when my customers are in their meetings. They love that. They feel very taken care of. I guess it feels like Mom is driving them around.

Today is one of those fun days when I drive someone and don't have to pick them up for five hours, but I still get paid for the whole time. A CEO of a very big company flew in, I picked him up to give a speech at university. I will take him back to the plane later. I am driving the big Cadillac Escalade SUV.

Tomorrow and Friday I will drive some folks from London that are here to shop. I really look forward to when they come into town. They are more like my friends than my customers. I get to drive the big business class van. The fun is finding a place to park it near my house. I can't fit it into the garage. The Brits love to make fun of my strong Chicago accent. They like the way I say my name; Seaaaaandy. And while we are at it, I live in Chi-Kaw-Go, not in Chi-kah-go.

I like driving the Cadillac sedan the best. First of all it only has 350 miles on it. Second, you guessed it, XM Radio. The XM subscription ran out on the Escalade. I miss my 1940s music and my bluegrass station. Ooh, and Deep Tracks. I love that one.

Time to go for a walk. I need some exercise. I have time to get a few miles in. I am in a walking challenge, on BuddySlim. http://www.weight-loss-forums.buddyslim.com/fitness-challenge/2532-new-years-eve-walking-challenge.html
I need to get in 130 miles by New Years Eve!
On Buddy Slim I am known as Jasmyn. I wrenched my back and hip, running. I hope my hip and back get better in time for me to do 130 miles. I only started running a few months ago. I went the the Chiropractor, and she has me feeling much better. Dr. Heather if you are reading this, you are a genious! I can't wait to start running again.

What do you do with cram berries? Uhhhhh :)

Sandy's Market News:

Truth be told, I am a serial grocery shopper. It seems like every ethnic neighborhood I go to has some great little market for fresh produce.

I just love to cook. Usually the trunk of my car has at least one bag of fresh vegetables and fruit.

I see some very interesting signs!

"Mr. ethnic grocery store owner I want my vegetables fresh all day. Got that?" And while we are on the subject of food, I like it really fresh. All day. Not just in the morning, not just in the evening, all day. Got that?

All Day Freshness

Aww Nuts, I wanted peas

There are flowers still blooming in Chicago. Not for long, though, it was in the 30s today. And later it got sunny.
The stock market went up. Any correlation?

Chicago early in the morning

It's a quarter after 6 in the morning and it is still dark out. My XM Radio of the day is Radio Disney. Not all of the stations are working today. Bah humbug, it's too early for Christmas music.

Time fade....It's now 8 in the morning and the sun still isn't up. By far, the funniest comment of the day came from a gasoline truck driver who was filling up the pumps at the gas station.

Me:"Wow, it's crowded today, they must be giving away free gas."

Truck driver: "You don't want my opinion, do you?"

Me:
"Sure."

>Truck driver:

"Too many a**holes, not enough asphalt

Me:
"Ohh.... hahaha"

Dieting is ok but I am not working out

I'm kind of bummed that I haven't been able to work out much lately. My hip has been sore. The doc says it is iliotibial band syndrome. I am secretly proud that I have a runner's injury. I want to get 120 miles of walking or running in my New Years. So far I can only walk about a mile, and the Chiropractor said I can't run. I can do yoga if I take it easy. I have never done the Chiropractor thing before. My back hurt when I went in and stopped hurting when I came out. That was wonderful. So far so good.

I have been following Seth Roberts' Shangri-La Diet with prety good results. The point is to use flavorless calories to trick your body into thinking it is full without adding the calories. I don't quite understand it, but it works. I drink oil! Flaxseed oil usually. And sugar water. There, my secrets are out. I only have 15 more pounds to lose. If you have to know the details, here they are. Float one tablespoon of oil on a half-cup of water. Swig it.

Yummy dinner that I made last night:

Tofu, cheddar, and vegetable bake

Slice 1 block of tofu and marinate at least 15 minutes in the following:

4 tablespoons soy sauce or tamari
1 crushed garlic clove or 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/4 cup water

In a covered casserole dish layer the following, sprinkling each layer with seasoning salt:

1 onion, sliced thin
the tofu, drained, reserving marinade
1 sweet potato, sliced
1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese
1/2 head cauliflower, broken in florets
1 can tomatoes, drained
1/4 cup grated cheddar cheese

Pour the marinade over all. Mix 2 tablespoons bread crumbs with 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon thyme, and 1 teaspoon olive oil for a topping, optional.

Bake at 375 for 40 minutes. Serves 4

The bobble-head doggie guy at U.S. Highway 55 and Cicero, Chicago

Selling trinkets U.S. 55 and Cicero, Chicago
Guy selling bobble head dogs: "Two for five bucks". "You don't have five bucks? How about two?" "No? You got a dollar?" Me: "Sorry, I really don't have any cash, only plastic. But thanks for letting me take your picture."

There are always several people working this busy corner on the way to Midway Airport in Chicago. Well, more than several, actually. Usually at least six. On one corner is the "Homeless please help" sign guy with the pleading eyes. On the other corner is a woman who says her car broke down with her kids in it. The only thing, is it is the same people begging every day. It's very well choreographed, and I wonder what penalty they pay for trespassing on someone else's corner turf.

The stock market goes up on a sunny day after five gloomy down days

Is there a connection? It has been gloomy as all get out for the past week. We're talking gray. No sun. Really depressing. I remember in high school meeting someone who told me their mood wasn't affected by the weather. And thinking wow, mine is, is there something wrong with me? In winter I feel very introspective, like a tree digging deep with its feeler roots seeking nourishment. But today I feel great because the sun is out, people are smiling, and the temperature is in the 60s.

My skin is starting to look a little pasty, you know, that weird white color of people's faces at O'Hare Airport in January when you are flying back from Miami. I get used to the sunshine really fast. When the days get shorter and dimmer in the fall I start getting depressed. I love the fall colors, but it always symbolizes winter coming. By January I am always fine. By January I have gotten introspective and am in my planning state. My mind is so fertile in the winter. I wonder if trees do that. I wonder if they are planning for the spring, and thinking about getting their sap flowing. I wonder if they are stretching down a little deeper in the ground to get the the water and minerals.

Is there a connection? Between trees and me looking for the sun? Is there a connection? That the stock market went down when the days were gloomy and up when the sun came out?

View

I am waiting to pick someone up at an office building in Oak Brook, Illinois. There is a Latina lady cleaning the shiny glass on the gold framed revolving door with a white cloth. She is cleaning while the radio plays Suavacita Bailador. I imagine her dancing with her husband to the hot Latin music.

The red maples and yellow feathery honey locusts are blowing me away. I love how pretty the trees look.

Running and walking stats of the day:
1 hour 15 minutes combined running and walking
4.6 miles
3.7 miles per hour

I can't wait to get my iPod Nano! I bought a little transmitter for my running shoes at Nike. I tried it out yesterday with my daughter's Nano. How cool! It keeps track of distance, speed, and I can download it all after I run and keep track of it! I thought I had a Nano but it was a Shuffle. My sister was kind enough to buy a Nano for me.

What I do

So come out and say what you do already, right? OK then. This was supposed to be a temporary thing. This business that I am in. Yeah that's right. I am embarrassed about what I do for a living.

Okay so what do I do that I am so embarrassed about? I drive. A sedan. A groovy Cadillac, always brand new. My company gets a sweet deal from Cadillac. Sometimes I drive an Escalade SUV. And if I have to, van or a bus that holds about 13 people. I don't drive a big limo. I am just a chauffeur. Oh my company calls it being an Executive Chauffeur. I guess that "Executive Chauffeur"means that I drive executives around.

When I first started driving, I think it was in 1997, I drove a big limo. It was loads of fun. I like what I do now, better. I work for a fabulous company. I get perks like a 401K, four weeks vacation, and a gym membership. The money isn't nearly as good as I made driving a big limo, but the wonderful people I work is part of the reason I am still here after 8 years.

The people I drive are mostly doing road shows. They are the financial guys taking a company's president around to see potential investors. Or maybe taking a company's chief financial officer around to let investors know who the folks behind the companies they invest in are. Sometimes it is companies that they have stock in. Other times it is private equity investors putting deals together. They fly in on private planes, have a meeting for an hour, then they leave again. Sometimes it is financial analysts who come to tell investors about a whole sector, like biotech, or maybe they cover two or three companies, and they are there to tell their investors what the companies are up to. I knew nothing about this stuff before I started driving.

I love my job because I get to learn so much every day. Sometimes I drive doctors around who are giving lectures to other doctors about their new breakthroughs in their medical specialty or about a new drug. Sometimes I drive a "famous" people around, but they act pretty much like all my other customers. No big deal. Most everyone I drive is in a good mood. Or at least kind. We get into some amazingly cool conversations and the ride just flies by.

But it's time for a change. I am very entreprenurial, and the creative juices are flowing.

Confessions

Airing my panties for the world to see. Or smell! Okay now that I have totally embarrassed myself I will just put my foot in my mouth and suck my toe. I am more than a little self conscious about this blog. It will be frank, blunt, and totally honest.

I have smatterings of posts in forums all over the place. I decided to have just one blog. I am a new runner and really digging it. I am always trying to find ways to lose weight. I love how I feel after I exercise. I love gardening. Did I mention I'm single? And I love making art and music.

Ever since I started this job..... ahh, where do I start... that I have done for --*gack*-- has it been 8 years? Uh, ok, now I will beat around the bush, not coming out and saying exactly what I do for a living. Why do I always do that? Not admit what I do for a living. Sometimes I just tell people I am in sales. My job is an embarrassment to me. I mean I am capable of so much more. But I have had a lot of fun doing it. This job has been a wonderful resting place for me. My mind has rested and I feel refreshed, and probably about ready to start my own business again, but that's another story.

This is getting really long so I will stop here. I will be back again, I think I like Blogger.

Quote of the day:

"Tell me a fact and I'll learn. Tell me the truth and I'll believe. Tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever."
